39. Jang Yeong Sil(Science Garden)_(장영실 과학공원 부산)

 I was sad when I visited tomb of Jang Yeongsil last time, so this time I visited Jang Yeongsil Science Garden which display the inventions of him. For more information on Jang Yeongsil, please refer to the reference room in my blog(http://gbbrake.tistory.com/22)

 It is located in Bokcheon-dong, Dongrae-gu, Busan. Many other attractions are nearby such as Bokcheon Museum, which is a kind of prehistoric museum, and Dongrae Eupseong, which was the first battleground of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.

 Busan is farthest from Seoul in Korea and the second largest city after Seoul. It takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes to 5 hours by car from Seoul. Despite long distance, many Seoul people visit Busan and it is also the most favorite place for me.

장영실 과학동산은 부산 동래구 복천동에 위치하고 있으며 선사박물관의 일종인 복천박물관과 임진왜란시 첫 격전지였던 동래 읍성 등 다른 많은 볼거리들이 근처에 있으니 방문 시 참고하시면 좋을 것 같다.

부산은 대한민국의 도시 중 서울에서 가장 먼 곳에 위치한 도시이며 서울 다음으로 큰 도시이다. 서울에서 승용차로 4시간 30분~5시간 정도 걸린다. 먼 이동거리에도 불구하고 많은 볼거리로 서울사람들이 많이 찾고 있으며 개인적으로 제일 좋아하는 곳이기도 하다.

There is an alleyway in front of the Garden, so parking is difficult. If you use parking lot of Bokcheon museum, then it would be more convenient.

장영실 과학동산 앞은 골목길이고 협소하여 주차가 어려우니 복천박물관 주차장을 이용하면 관람이 편할 것이다.

 After parking, if you walk along the road next to the road, you can see the following sign. There is Jang Yeongsil Science garden 180m from here.

주차 후 도로 옆으로 난 길을 따라 걷다 보면 아래와 같은 안내판을 볼 수 있다. 180m앞에 장영실 과학동산이 있다.

 This is the entrance to the Science Garden. The birthplace of Jang Yeongsil is here in Busan Dongrae area, and it seems to have been made to commemorate it.

이곳이 과학동산 입구이다. 장영실의 출생지가 이곳 부산 동래 지역이라 이를 기념하기 위해 만들어 놓은 듯 하다.

 Many inventions of Jang Yeongsil are displayed in here. Predicting seasonal changes was very important for economic activities because the Joseon Dynasty was an agricultural society, and Jang Young-sil's inventions led to the revolutionary development of measuring season and time at that time.

 이곳에는 장영실의 많은 발명품들이 전시되어 있다. 조선시대는 농경사회 였기 때문에 계절의 변화를 예측하는 것이 경제활동에 매우 중요한 때였으며 장영실의 발명품들은 당시에 절기와 시간을 정확히 측정하는데 혁명과도 같은 발전을 가져왔다고 한다. 

 I only learned about the water clock and the sundial in the textbook. But when I came here, I was impressed by the idea that he made a lot of things.

 교과서에서는 물시계, 해시계 정도만 배웠는데 이곳에 와 보니 참 많은 것들을 만드셨구나 하는 생각에 감탄을 금치 못했다.

 Dongnae Eupseong is located next to the Science Garden. It was the place where the first battle with the Japanese army occurred during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and has a painful memory that many Korean soldiers and people died in this place.

 과학동산 바로 옆에 동래읍성이 있다.  임진왜란 당시 일본군과 첫 전투가 벌어진 장소였으며 이곳에서 많은 조선군인과 백성이 죽었던 아픈 기억을 가지고 있다.

 The castle in Dongnae city area was demolished due to urban area maintenance plan and the castle was left only in the mountainous area during the Japanese colonial period. Looking at the gate, the color of the stone at the bottom and top are different each other.

 일제시대에 동래 시가지에 있던 성은 시가지 정비계획 등으로 철거되고 산지에만 성곽모습이 남아 있었는데 부분 보수 중이라고 한다. 성문을 보면 아랫부분과 윗부분의 돌 색깔이 다르다.

 The text in Chinese characters on the right side of the picture below is from Song Sang Hyun, who was the head of Dongrae at the time of the Japanese invasion of Korea, to General of Japan army. 'It is easy to fight and die, but it is difficult to lend a way.' You can get a glimpse of the mindset of the desperate resistance. Song Sang-hyun fought against the Japanese army after he wrote this article and died. The Japanese soldiers were 10,000 of elite soldiers but the Joseon Army were less than 1000 person including 20 regular soldiers. It would not have been easy to make a decision to fight in this situation. But I also think it it was really good choice to fight in this hard situation. As a result, nearly 3,500 residents of Dongnae were killed.

아래사진 우측의 한자로 된 문구는 임진왜란 당시 동래성 책임자였던 송상현이 항복을 권유하는 일본군 장군에게 보낸 글이다.

'싸우다 죽기는 쉬우나 길을 빌려주기는 어렵다.' 결사항전의 마음가짐을 엿볼 수 있다. 송상현은 이 글을 보낸 후 일본군과 싸우다 장렬히 전사했다고 한다. 일본군은 정예병 1만이었고 조선군은 정규병사 20명에 성 안 남자들을 다 모아도 천 명이 되지 않았다고 한다. 이러한 상황에서 싸우는 결정을 하기는 쉽지 않았을 것이다. 수적으로 상대가 안되는 상황에서 굳이 백성들을 사지로 몰면서 싸우는 것이 과연 좋은 선택 이었을까라는 생각도 해보게 된다. 결국 이 싸움으로 인해 동래성 주민 3,500 명은 거의 모두 죽임을 당했다.   

 It is Dongnae Eupseong History Museum. It displays the contents related to Eupseong including the Battle of Dongnae Castle. It is not big, so take a little time to look around.

 There is also a toilet inside.

 동래읍성 역사관이다. 동래성 전투를 비롯하여 읍성에 관련된 내용을 전시해 놓고 있다. 크지 않으니 잠깐 시간을 내어 둘러보는 것도 좋다.

내부에 화장실도 있다. 

 Since Busan is a big city, it has distinctive characteristics in each region. Although Dongnae Hot Spring was well known in the past, many tourists have found it, but as the facility is getting old and the hot spring tourism industry has declined, tourists are moving toward Haeundae. Haeundae is a newly developed area, so if this place catch the eye of tourist with high buildings and clean facilities, Dongnae retains the appearance of historic old city.

 If you think inverse concept, accomodation facility of Dongnae is cheaper than Haeundae, and there are many attractions such as Geumjeong Mountain and Jang Yeongsil Science garden nearby, so I recommend you to feel one side of various faces in Busan from Dongnae.

 부산은 큰 도시이므로 지역별로 특색이 있다. 동래온천이 과거에 유명해서 관광객들이 많이 찾았으나 시설이 노후화되고 온천관광산업이 쇠락한 요즘 관광객들은 해운대 쪽으로 옮겨가고 있는 추세이다. 해운대는 새로 개발된 지역 이므로 높은 건물 깨끗한 시설들로 눈길을 사로잡는다면 이곳 동래는 유서 깊은 옛 도시의 모습을 간직하고 있다. 

 역 발상을 해 본다면 이곳 동래는 숙박시설이 해운대에 비해 저렴하며 금정산성과 이곳 장영실 과학동산 근처 등 볼거리도 많기 때문에 동래에서 부산의 여러가지 얼굴 중 한 면을 느껴보고 가실 것을 추천한다.
