39. Jang Yeong Sil(Tomb, Asan)_(장영실 아산 묘소)

 Jang Yeongsil is one of the best scientists in Korean history. Though it was not easy to study science and technology in a social atmosphere which despised science as called the others field, he rendered distinguished services in the development of astronomy and metal type. For this reason, he could be promoted to high ranked government officer although he was low.  Jang Yeongsil was dismissed and disappeared in history after the event of Sejong's royal palanquin destruction. There is no known place where his grave is, but recently, the descendants of Jang Yeongsil have created a tomb for him next to the grave of the progenitor(Jang Seo) and honor him. The tomb of Jang Yeongsil is located in Asan, about 1 hour and 30 minutes from Seoul by car.

장영실은 한국역사에 기록된 인물 중 가장 훌륭한 과학자 중의 한 사람이다. 기술을 잡과라고 천시하였던 사회분위기속에 과학기술을 연구하기란 쉽지 않았을 것임에도 천문학 발전과 금속활자 개발에 큰 공을 세웠으며 천민임에도 불구하고 높은 벼슬에 까지 올랐던 입지 전적의 인물이다. 장영실에 대한 자세한 내용은 자료실을 참고하도록 하자.(http://gbbrake.tistory.com/22)

장영실은 세종의 어가가 부서지는 사건이 있은 후 이를 이유로 파직되고 역사속에서 사라진다.  묘소도 어디 있는지 알려진 바가 없으나 최근에 장영실의 후손들이 시조인 장서의 묘 바로 옆에 가묘를 조성하여 모시고 있다.

장영실묘는 아산에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 1시간 30분 거리에 위치한다.

 Let's keep in mind that there is no parking lot and the entrance is very narrow so big cars are difficult to come. There is no separate parking lot in front of the tomb, so it is inconvenient to park on the road.

 주차장이 없고 진입로가 매우 협소하여 큰 차는 들어오기 어려움을 염두하자. 묘소앞에도 별도의 주차장은 마련되어 있지 않아 갓길에 주차해야 하는 불편이 있다.

 The progenitor of Asan Jang clan, which is family name of Jang Yeongsil, is Jang Seo. He was the General of the Song Dynasty, and defected to Goryeo dynasty. He was settled in Asan after receiving this land from the King Yejong.

 장영실의 성인 아산 장씨의 시조는 장서이다. 송나라 장군이었던 장서가 고려에 망명하여 당시 임금인 예종으로부터 아산을 식읍으로 하사 받으면서 이곳에 정착해 살게 되었다고 한다.  

 There is a monument to announce the establishment of memorial stone and tomb of Jang Young-sil and maintenance around the grave in the vicinity of the grave of Jang Seo.

 장서의 묘소 주변에 장영실 선생 추모비와 가묘 신설 및 묘소 주변 정비를 알리는 기념비가 서 있다.

 I am glad that his descendants have been renovated to honor his great achievements, and that Jang Young-sil, who has just vanished in history, has now had a space where he can rest comfortably. But from a tourism standpoint, I would not recommend visit. First, there is danger of accidents because the access road is too narrow and there is no parking space.  In addition, I think it is not worth looking at because it is not a real tomb.

 후손들이 위대한 업적을 기리기 위해 새로 단장한 묘소를 보니 역사속에서 홀연히 사라져간 장영실선생께서 이제라도 편안히 쉴 수 있는 공간이 생겼다는 사실이 기쁘다. 그러나 관광하는 측면에서 볼 때는 방문을 추천하지는 않겠다. 우선 진입로가 너무 좁아 사고의 위험이 있고 주차 공간도 없으며 실제 묘가 아닌 가묘이기 때문에 역사적으로 보고 느낄 가치는 없는 것으로 생각된다.
