36. Choi Yeong(Tomb of General Choi)_최영장군 묘(고양)

 'Don ' t be blinded by money.' I think that few Koreans have ever heard of this. It is Choi Yeong 's word. He was great commander and loyalist and Goryeo was destroyed by the death of him. The story of Choi Yeong and Lee Seong Gye, both of whom seemed to be concerned and thought about the country and the people but were forced to face hostility, is also a popular subject in many novels and dramas.  After fighting and defeating to block the Wihwado Retreat of Lee Seong gye, General Choi Yeong was executed and buried here in Yangju. Before he died, General Choi said, "If I had done something wrong in my life, grass would be grown on my grave." It was said that the tomb of Choi Young was a red tomb because it did not grow until the 1970s.

'황금 보기를 돌같이 하라.' 대한민국 사람이라면 누가 한 말인지는 몰라도 이 말을 못들어 본 사람은 거의 없을 것이라 생각한다. 고려 말의 명장/ 충신으로 고려의 운명이 이 분의 죽음을 끝으로 다 했다고 해도 과언이 아닌 최영의 말씀이다. 나라와 백성을 걱정하고 생각하는 마음은 같았으나 보는 관점이 달라 적대할 수 밖에 없었던 두 명장 최영과 이성계의 이야기는 여러 소설과 드라마에서 다루는 단골 소재이기도 하다. 최영에 대한 자세한 사항은 자료실을 참고하도록 하자.(http://gbbrake.tistory.com/161)

이성계의 위화도 회군을 저지하기 위해 싸우다 패해 참수 당한 후 최영장군은 이곳 양주에 묻히게 된다. 죽기 전 최영장군께서 '내가 생전에 한 순간이라도 부정한 일을 저질렀다면 무덤에 풀이 자랄것'이라고 유언했는데 정말 최영장군의 산소에는 1970년대까지 풀이 자라지 않아 붉은색 묘였다고 한다. 

General Choi Yeong's grave is located about 1 hour from Seoul.

최영장군 묘는 서울에서 약 1시간 거리에 위치한다.

 General Choi Yeong's famous saying stand at the entrance of the tomb as a monument.

 최영장군의 명언이 묘소 진입로 입구에 비석으로 서 있다. 

 There are only about 4 parking spaces at the entrance of the tomb, so if many people visit it, parking may be difficult. There is no admission fee because it is not a special viewing facility.

 주차장은 묘소 진입로에 약 4대정도 주차할 공간 뿐이라 만약 많은 사람이 찾는다면 주차에 어려움이 있을 수도 있음을 염두해 두어야 한다. 특별한 관람시설이 아니라 입장료는 없다.

 It is a sign that it is the entrance of General Choi's grave. The grave is usually seen immediately upon climbing the entrance, but for this tomb, you have to walk about 20 minutes from here. Be sure to wear comfortable sneakers.

최영장군묘의 입구임을 알려주는 표지. 보통 산소는 입구를 따라 올라가면 바로 보이는데 최영장군묘의 경우 이곳부터 약 20분정도 걸어서 가야한다. 반드시 편안한 운동화를 신고 가도록 하자.

 If you go up the stairs, you will see a mountain path as shown below. Many chestnut and acorn trees are planted.

 계단을 올라가면  산소가 아니라 아래와 같이 산길이 펼쳐진다. 밤나무와 도토리 나무가 많이 심어져 있다.

 If you walk along the street, the trees will disappear and you will see the fields below and it is the place of tomb of Choi.

 길을 따라 쭉 걷다보면 나무가 없어지고 아래와 같은 들판이 나오는데 건너편이 바로 최영장군이 계신 곳이다.

 최영장군에 대한 설명이 쓰여 있는 안내판. 경기도 기념물 제 23호라고 한다. 산소에 오르기 전에 잠시 쉬면서 설명글을 읽어보자. 산소를 볼 때 또 다른 감흥을 선사할 것이다.

 Now, if you climb this staircase, you can see the tomb.

 자, 이제 이 계단만 오르면 산소를 볼 수 있다.

 When you climb the stairs, you can see the second tomb located at the top and bottom. It is the grave of Choi Yeong and his father Choi Wonjik.

 계단을 오르면 상 하로 위치한 산소 2기를 볼 수 있는데 최영장군과 부친인 최원직의 묘이다.

 The two tombs are square-shaped tombs with a rectangular base, which is typical of the Goryeo dynasty and was popular until the early Joseon Dynasty. At that time, people had a concept of the universe that the sky is round and the ground is a square and when a person dies, they have to return to space, so the shape of the graveyard is square and the bottom is round. Later, as the land was known to be round, the bottom of the tomb changed to round type.

두 묘 모두 아래 기단이 사각형인 방형묘인데 전형적인 고려 양식으로서 조선 초기까지 유행되었다. 당시의 우주관은 하늘은 둥글고 땅은 네모나다는 천원지방의 개념을 가지고 있었으며 사람이 죽으면 우주로 돌아가야 하기 때문에 묘지의 모양이 아래는 네모, 봉분은 둥글게 조성한 것이다. 이후에 땅이 둥글다는 것이 알려지면서 묘지의 아래모양이 둥글게 변했다고 한다.

 In fact, the phrase 'Don ' t be blinded by money.'  is the word that the father Choi Wonjik said when Choi Yeong was 16 years old. It is good to see the father and son together even though they are dead. In Korea, there is a feng shui idea for a long time, and it is said that the descendants can live well by making the tomb at a good spot. Although it is not supported by not science, these ideas are rooted in the perception of Koreans, and some people still struggle to make their parents' graves in good spots.

 You can understand this concept through movie 'Myungdang' which was recently released.

사실 '황금을 보기를 돌같이 하라'는 말은 최영장군이 16세때 부친 최원직이 하신 말씀이라고 한다. 죽어서도 부자가 사이좋게 계신 모습이 보기 좋다. 한국에서는 예로부터 풍수지리 사상이 있어 산소를 좋은 자리(명당)에 써야 자손들이 잘 살수 있다고 했다. 과학적으로 근거는 없지만 이러한 사상이 한국인들의 인식 저변에 깔려 있어 일부 사람들은 아직도 좋은 자리에 부모님의 산소를 모시려고 애를 쓴다.

 최근에 개봉되었던 영화'명당'을 보면 이와 관련된 내용을 엿볼 수 있다.

 The tomb of General Choi Young is also in excellent spot. Choi Yeong is Dongju Choi clan and his descendants kept the belief that they would not enter government service during Joseon founded by Lee Seong gye, so they did not made name in the world in during long time and began to stand out after the destruction of Joseon.

 

I could feel the generals' loyalty to Goryeo in this place.

최영장군의 묘도 명당에 모셔져 있다고 한다. 최영은 동주 최씨로서 후손들이 이성계가 세운 조선에서 벼슬을 하지 않겠다고 하여 조선시대에는 크게 빛을 보지 못하고 조선이 망하고 나서야 두각을 나타내기 시작하였다. 

고려에 대한 장군의 충심을 느껴보고 간다.
