Jeongok Prehistory Museum(Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi)_ 전곡선사박물관(경기도 연천)

 Yeoncheon became famous region throughout the country since the discovery of the remains of the Old Stone Age after the USFK first discovered the paleolithic relics in 1978. A number of archaeological surveys have been carried out at the national level, revealing that the ruins are scattered on the basaltic plateau surrounding the Hantan River south of Jeongok - eup.

 I think that the environment which is good for the Old Stone Age people to live was built in here Yeoncheon. The Hantan River flow near this region and perhaps it provided abundant water and food resources. There were many river stones surrounding the river and they would had been excellent for their tools. Wide plains and caves were caused by volcanoes may gave the best place for hunting, gathering and housing.

연천이 전국적으로 알려지게 된 건 1978년에 주한미군이 구석기 유물을 처음 발견한 뒤 구석기 시대 유적지가 발견되면서 부터이다. 국가적인 차원에서 수 차례 고고학 조사가 실시된 뒤 전곡읍 남쪽 한탄강이 감싸고 도는 현무암 대지위에 유적들이 분포하고 있음을 알 수 있게 되었다. 

 개인적인 생각으로 구석기인들이 살기에 좋은 환경이 이곳 연천에 조성되어 있던것이 아닌가 싶다. 한탄강이 끼고 돌아 물자원, 식량자원이 풍부하고 강가의 돌들은 그들의 도구를 만드는 재료로 더할 나위없이 훌륭했을 것이다. 화산으로 만들어진 넓은 평야지대 및 동굴들은 수렵, 채집 및 주거를 위한 최적의 장소를 제공해 주지 않았을까.

 The Jeongok Prehistory Museum has Old Stone Age remains Excavated here.

 전곡 선사박물관은 이 곳에서 발굴된 구석기 유물들을 보유하고 있다. 주소는 아래와 같으며 서울에서 약 1시간 30분정도 걸린다.

 In fact, it is a bit disappointing to see the entrance seen on the road. At first glance, the two small domed buildings shown in the picture below makes people mistaken that it is museum building. I was hesitant to see the museum entrance on the road because these small buildings are the museum. As you can see later, in fact, the prehistory museum boasts a beautiful appearance that is one of the best domestic museums I have visited. The building in front was the restroom. I think museum would be able to give visitors a much better impression if they improve appearance of entrance on the road.

사실 도로에서 보이는 입구만 보면 약간 실망스럽다. 얼핏 보기에 아래 사진에 보이는 2개의 작은 돔형 건물은 박물관이라고 착각할 수 있기 때문이다. 필자도 도로에서 박물관 입구를 보고 들어가볼까 잠시 망설였었다.  뒤에 보시겠지만 사실 선사박물관은 필자가 가본 국내 박물관 중에 손에 꼽힐 만큼 아름다운 외관을 자랑한다. 앞에 보이는 건물은 화장실이었다. 박물관 측에서도 도로에서 보이는 외관에 신경을 좀 쓴다면 사람들에게 훨씬 좋은 인상을 심어 줄 수 있을 것 같다.

 

There is a large free parking lot inside, which makes parking easy.

안으로 들어가면 넓은 무료주차장이 있어 주차가 용이하다.

 After parking, go down to the bathroom building you saw for the first time and go up about 200m then you can see the museum building. The theme is related to prehistoric relics but the museum's appearance is ultra-modern. A beautifully curved metallic building shines brilliantly.

주차를 한 뒤 아래로 내려가 처음 보았던 화장실 건물을 지나 200m정도 올라가면 박물관 건물이 보인다. 주제는 선사 유적관련인데 박물관 외형은 초 현대적이다. 아름다운 곡면으로 이루어진 금속성 재질의 건물이 눈부시게 반짝인다.

 Admission is free. I would like to thank to Yeoncheon-Gun for opening up these Beneficial and precious relics free of charge. When you enter the entrance, you will see a staircase and if you go up the stairs to the second floor, you will see the main exhibition hall.

 입장료는 무료이다. 이렇게 유익하고 귀중한 자료를 무료로 개방해 준 연천군에 감사한다. 입구로 들어가면 계단이 나오는데 계단을 통해 2층으로 올라가면 주 전시관이 나온다.

 On the second floor, there is a large space. It consists of Permanent Exhibition, Archelogical Lab and Special Exhibition.

 2층으로 올라가면 넓은 공간이 나오는데 상설 전시관(Permanent Exhibition), 고고학체험실(Archelogical Lab), 그리고 기획전시실(Special Exhibition)으로 구성되어 있다. 

 I visited the permanent exhibition hall firstly. The exhibits are displayed well as a recently built museums, and the interiors were also great.

 상설전시관을 먼저 들어가 보았다. 최근에 만들어진 박물관 답게 보기 좋게 전시물들을 배치해 놓았으며 인테리어도 훌륭했다.

 There is a space that reproduces the caves where the Old Stone Age people lived.

 Next, I went to the special exhibition room. It is possible to descend by escalator. It is a fact that I learned later, but I recommend that you visit all the exhibits on the 2nd floor first and then move to the exhibition room. This is because the escalator is installed only down and it is directly connected to the exit from the exhibition room. The museum seems to have arranged the exhibition hall considering the tourists' movement in that way.

 다음은 기획전시실로 가 보았다. 에스컬레이터를 타고 내려갈 수 있도록 되어 있다. 나중에 알게 된 사실이지만 2층의 관람시설 모두들 보고 기획전시실로 가 볼것을 추천드린다. 에스컬레이터는 내려가는 것만 설치되어 있고 기획전시실에서 출구로 바로 연결이 되어 있기 때문이다. 박물관 측에서도 동선을 그렇게 염두해 두고 전시관을 배치한 것으로 보인다.

 

 At the time of my visit, the works of the artist who paint with the motif of a fist ax for a lifetime were exhibited. He was inspired by the fist ax and used it as a art material for his life, and I was able to enjoy the imagination of the author 's prehistoric age, the present - day view based on this, and the encounter between past and present.

 필자가 방문했을 당시는 주먹도끼를 주제로 한 그림을 평생 그린 작가의 작품이 전시되어 있었다. 주먹도끼에서 영감을 받아 평생의 작품소재로 사용하고 있는 작가의 선사시대에 대한 상상력과 이를 토대로 바라본 현대의 모습, 그리고 과거와 현재의 만남을 재미있게 볼 수 있었다.

I went upstairs to the second floor and looked around the Archelogical Lab.

다시 2층으로 올라가 고고학 체험실을 둘러 보았다.

 There is a 3D movie called 'Jeongokri people' is screened for about 20 minutes every hour at the entrance of the first floor. However, like other domestic museums, it was a pity that foreigners could not see it because there were no English subtitles.

 I went out through the exit to the special exhibition room and headed to Jeongok-ri prehistoric site. During the visit to the museum, a lot of rain poured down to cool the heat, and the air entering to the lungs was fresh. The road from the museum to the prehistoric site and the landscape facilities seemed to be well managed by the museum. The scenery is very nice.

1층 입구쪽에는 20분정도 상영되는 '전곡리 사람들'이라는 3D영화가 1시간마다 방영되는데 유익한 내용을 재미있게 구성하여 볼 만 했다. 하지만 다른 국내 박물관과 마찬가지로 영어 자막이 없어 외국인들이 보기 어려운 점은 아쉬웠다.

 기획전시실쪽으로 난 출구를 통해 밖으로 나가 전곡리 선사 유적지로 향했다. 그 사이 많은 비가 쏟아져 더위를 식혀 주었고 폐로 들어오는 공기도 신선했다. 박물관에서 선사 유적지로 난 도로며 조경들이 신경을 많이 쓴 것처럼 보였다. 경치가 참 좋다.

 The operating hours of prehistoric sites are until 5 PM. I could not see all of the wide historical sites and I had no choice but to skim through because of late arrival. I think it would be good to expect that it will take about two hours for all the viewing considering the scale.

 The prehistoric museums and sites were thought to be like pearls in the soil. I visited the site after browsing the internet for good things to see around Soong Ui Jeon , but did not expect much in terms of the size and completeness of the facility. However, I have been impressed by the fact that the museum is not inferior to any national museum in Korea.

Even though you visit the museum and the ruins here from Seoul for 3 hours round trip, it would be excellent choice and you will be able to see many things.

Although I knew that news later, this place was selected as one of the top five public museums in 2015.

선사 유적지의 운영시간은 오후 5시까지이다. 너무 늦게 도착하여 넓은 유적지를 다 돌아볼 수 없었으며 그냥 훑듯이 스쳐보고 나올 수 밖에 없었다. 규모를 보건대 약 2시간 정도 예상하고 보면 좋을 듯싶다. 

선사박물관 및 유적지는 흙 속의 진주와 같이 생각되었다. 숭의전을 보고 근처에 괜찮은 볼거리를 검색해서 찾아왔으나 규모나 시설의 완성도 면에서 크게 기대를 하지는 않았다. 하지만 직접 와 본 결과 국내 어느 국립박물관과 비교해도 떨어지지 않는 시설에 정말 감탄스러웠다.

서울에서 이 박물관 및 유적지를 관람하기 위해서 왕복 3시간을 들여 방문한다 해도 전혀 아깝지 않고 많은 것을 보고 갈 수 있다고 생각한다.

나중에 알게 된 사실이지만 이곳은 2015년 전국 5대 공립박물관에 선정되기도 하였다.
