Jaein Falls in Yeoncheon_ 연천 재인폭포

 Yeoncheon was also a strange area for me. I traveled almost only to the south area of Seoul and only a few sites of the north side. So I do not have much information about the area and I am traveling this area while studying. The lava flowed from the center of the peninsula hundreds of thousands of years ago, passing through Cheorwon, along the old Hantan River, down here to Yeoncheon, and materials caused by erupting volcanoes are piled up to form unique landforms not seen in other parts of Korea. Because of this, it is designated as the Hantan, Imjin River National Geological Park and preserved by Korea government.

 Jaein Waterfall is a scenic spot created by this special landform of Yeoncheon. A tributary of the Hantan River forms an 18-meter-high waterfall along the cliffs of the basalt rocks. Visiting a day without droughts is recommended because there is a difference in flow rate depending on the season and the weather.

연천은 필자에게도 생소한 지역이었다. 서울을 중심으로 남쪽으로만 거의 여행을 했지 북쪽은 거의 눈을 돌리지 않았다. 그래서 지역에 대한 정보도 많지 않아 공부를 하면서 돌아보고 있다. 한반도 중심에서 수십만년전에 흘러나온 용암이 철원을 지나 옛 한탄강을 따라 이곳 연천까지 내려왔으며 화산폭발물등이 쌓여 한국 다른 지역에서 볼 수 없는 특이한 지형을 하고 있다. 때문에 국가차원에서 한탄, 임진강 국가지질공원으로 지정하여 보존하고 있다.

재인 폭포는 이러한 연천의 특별한 지형이 만들어낸 절경이다. 한탄강의 지류가 현무암의 주상절리 절벽을 따라 18m높이의 폭포를 이루고 있는데 계절과 날씨에 따라 유량이 차이가 있으니 되도록이면 가뭄을 피해서 방문하는 것이 좋겠다.

Jain Waterfall is located in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi-do and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car from Seoul.

재인폭포는 경기도 연천에 위치하며 서울에서 승용차로 약 1시간 30분 걸린다.

Free parking is available. There is a sign in front of the waterfall, so you can visit it without difficulty.

무료 주차장이 있어 주차가 가능하다. 폭포 앞 표지판이 있어 어렵지 않게 찾아갈 수 있다.

Skywalk is free, and it is installed in a location where you can see Jain Falls well. If you are afraid of heights, please refrain.

스카이 워크가 있는데 무료이며 재인폭포를 잘 볼 수 있는 위치에 설치되어 있다. 고소공포증이 있는 분들은 삼가하도록 하자.

 Jain Waterfall is famous for its legend that the main character is a tightrope walker. There was a tightrope walker with a beautiful wife in the old days. Magistrate of this village coveted his wife so let him walked a line between the valleys of the waterfall. After the tightrope walker reached the middle of the line, the magistrate cut off the line and the walker was died. The wife pretended to accept the Magistrate's request for revenge, and after tearing the nose's nose out of bed at the bedside, she killed herself by biting her tongue.(Refer to Wikipedia)

재인폭포는 광대를 주인공으로 하는 전설이 유명하다. 옛날 아름다운 부인을 둔 광대가 있었는데 고을 수령이 그의 아내를 탐내어 폭포의 계곡 사이에 줄을 걸고 줄타기를 시킨 후 광대가 줄 가운데 이르자 줄을 끊어 죽게 하였다는 것이다. 아내는 복수하고자 수령의 수청을 받아들이는 척 하고는 잠자리에서 수령의 코를 물어 뜯은 후 혀를 깨물어 자결하였다는 이야기 이다.(위키백과 참고)

 There is a staircase going down to the waterfall, so you can see the waterfall nearby, but I could not go down because there was under construction for reinforcement work of this stair.

폭포 아래쪽으로 내려가는 계단이 있어서 가까이에서 폭포를 볼 수도 있으나 필자는 운이 나쁘게도 계단 보강공사를 하는 때 방문해서 내려가 볼 수는 없었다. 계단입구에서 촬영한 폭포와 주변 모습들.

 The road from the entrance to Jain Waterfall has a unique appearance that cannot be seen in other parts of Korea, so if you visit Yeoncheon, it is a place to stop by. However, I recommend that you refrain to go there when the weather is hot or drought because you may be disappointed at poor water flow and no place to avoid sunlight.

재인폭포로 들어가는 입구부터 한국 다른 지역에서는 볼 수 없는 특이한 모습을 하고 있어 연천을 방문한다면 한 번 들러 볼 만한 장소이다. 다만 덥거나 가뭄이 계속되는 날씨에는 자제할 것을 권한다. 초라한 폭포의 유량과 더위를 피할 마땅할 장소가 없어 실망할 수도 있기 때문이다.
