14. Hyecho Monument Pyeong taek(혜초기념비 평택)

 In 2009, the monument was built at Pyeongtaek City to commemorate the Hyecho Buddhist priest because he started pilgrimage to india from here Pyeongtaek.

 혜초스님이 평택항에서 인도 순례를 시작하셨다 하여 2009년에 평택시에서 혜초스님을 기념하기 위한 비를 조성하였다.

 The Hyecho Memorial monument is located in Hyeondeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, and takes about one and a half hours by car from Seoul.

혜초기념비는 경기도 평택시 현덕면에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 1시간 30분정도 걸린다.

Parking is convenient because sand beach park is located nearby. The parking fee is free. If you walk on the left side of the park after parking, you can see Hyecho monument near Pyeongtaek Lake.

근처에 모래톱 공원이 있어 주차가 편하다. 주차비는 무료이다.

주차후 공원을 왼쪽으로 끼고 걸으면 평택호 근처에서 혜초기념비를 만날 수 있다.

 When I visited, the weather was cloudy and foggy, so the scenery does not look good. But there is a panoramic lake around this monument so I think you can enjoy a nice view if you visit in clear weather.

 Hyecho did oversea trip 1500 years ago and wrote a travelog that would become a valuable resource. The route he visited is hard one even in today which oversea travel is common. Imagine what Hyecho thought when he started the trip from here.

필자가 방문할 당시 날씨가 흐리고 안개가 있어 경치가 좋아 보이지 않지만 탁 트인 호수를 끼고 있어 맑은 날씨에 방문하면 시원한 경치를 볼 수 있으리라 생각한다.

해외여행이 보편화된 지금도 다녀오기 힘든 여정을 1500년 전 신라시대에 다녀보고 귀중한 자료가 될 기행문을 작성한 혜초가 어떤 심경으로 이곳에서 인도로 출발했을까 상상해본다.
