13. Wonhyo(Tomb of Seol Chong,Gyeongju)_원효(경주 전홍유후 설총묘)

'Great master Wonhyo Skeleton Water'. 

 It is a part of lyrics in ‘the 100 great men who brightened Korea’ song. When Wonhyo was on the way to go China for study, he was thirsty during sleeping so drunk water and it was very delicious. He woke up the next morning and saw that it was a dirty water in the the skull. He realized the meaning of "everything depends on the mind" in this event. 

 Wonhyo is one of the most famous high priest of Buddhism in Korean history. For more information, please refer to the reference room in my blog (https://gbbrake.tistory.com/manage/post/13).

 

There are two historic site related to Wonhyo in Gyeongju. One is a Tomb of Seol Chong who is son between Wonhyo and princess Yosuk(Yosuk is 2nd daughter of King Muyeol) and the other is a three-story stone stupa from Goseonsa temple site in the Gyeongju National Museum. 

 I visited this place after Gyeongju Museum sightseeing by car on the way to dinner.

 

 한국을 빛낸 100명의 위인들 노래중 '원효대사 해골물'이라는 가사가 있다. 원효가 중국으로 유학 가던 도중 잠결에 목이 말라 달게 마신 물이 다음날 아침에 깨어나 다시 보니 해골바가지에 담긴 더러운 물이었음을 알고 '일체유심조(세상사 모든일은 마음 먹기에 달렸다)' 의미를 깨달았다는 의미이다. 원효는 한국 역사상 가장 유명한 고승 중 하나이다.  이에 대한 자세한 내용은 자료실을 참고하도록 하자.(https://gbbrake.tistory.com/manage/post/13)

경주에는 2곳의 원효관련 유적이 있다. 하나는 원효와 신라 태종 무열왕의 둘째 딸 요석공주 사이에서 태어난 설총의 묘(전홍유후 설총묘)가 있으며 다른 한 곳은 경주 국립박물관 내에 있는 고선사지 삼층석탑이다. 필자는 경주박물관을 관람한 뒤 저녁식사를 하는 길에 차량으로 이 곳을 찾았다.

Tomb of Seol Chong is located in Bomun-dong, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and takes about 4 hours by car from Seoul.

설총묘는 경상북도 경주시 보문동에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 4시간 걸린다.

설총묘가 바로 보인다.

Seol Chong is the son of Wonhyo and one of the most famous writer of the Silla period. He is also one of the founders of Korean Confucianism. There is an article called Hwawanggye which is created by him. We can imagine how great he is because his tomb is preserved around 1500 years.

 설총은 원효의 아들이면서 신라 중기의 대표적인 문장가 중의 한 사람으로서 한국 유교의 시조 중 한사람이다. 화왕계라는 글이 남아서 전해지고 있다. 얼마나 훌륭한 사람이면 1500년동안 묘소가 보존/ 관리되고 있을까.. 

설총묘는 마을 안에 위치하고 있어 교통이 불편하고 주변에 볼 거리는 부족하지만 원효의 발자취를 따라가보고 싶은 사람은 방문하여 감상해 보는 것도 좋을 듯 싶다.
