7. Baekkyeol(백결선생)_Wolseong palace site_Gyeongju(경주 월성)

Baekkyeol is known as a master of geomungo(Korea traditional musical instrument) and a symbol of thrift and saving & clean government employee. Currently, there are no historical sites directly related to Baekkyeol, and only the story that he lived near Gyeongju Wolsong. I decided to visit Wolseong district, which is known as the kingdom of Silla. Gyeongju Wolseong is located in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk province and takes about 4 hours by car from Seoul. You can use the parking lot around Daereungwon.

백결선생은 거문고의 명인이자 근검절약, 청백리의 상징으로 알려져 있다. 현재 백결선생과 직접 관련된 유적지는 전해지지 않고 있으며 경주 월성 근처에 살았다는 이야기가 전해질 뿐이다. 해서 신라의 왕성으로 알려진 월성지구를 방문해 보기로 했다. 백결선생에 대한 자세한 이야기는 자료실을 참고하도록 하자.(http://gbbrake.tistory.com/10?category=717030)

경주월성은 경상북도 경주에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 4시간 걸린다. 대릉원 주변 주차장을 이용하시면 되겠다.

Wolseong district can be seen right after passing through Gyerim from the tomb of king Naemul.

내물왕릉에서 계림을 지나면 바로 월성지구가 보인다. 

This wide open field was the place where the palace of old Silla were located. You can see with half an eye that it is great location with good sunlight. King Pasha of Silla built this castle in AD 101 and moved the capital to this place, and since then has been the residence of the kings of Silla.

이렇게 펼쳐진 넓은 벌판이 옛 신라의 궁궐이 있던 자리이다. 햇볕도 잘들고 한눈에 보아도 명당임을 알 수 있다. 신라 파사왕이 서기 101년에 성을 쌓아 이곳에 도읍을 옮겼으며 그 이후 신라 역대 왕들의 거처가 되었다고 한다.

If you take a walk to this wide field, you can see the Seokbinggo, an Stone ice Storage of the Joseon Dynasty. It is a general phenomenon that the ruins of one era are covered by the ruins of another era according to time passing.

넓은 벌판으로 걸음을 옮기다 보면 조선시대의 얼음창고인 석빙고를 볼 수 있다. 이건 보너스..ㅎㅎㅎ 시간이 흐르면서 한 시대의 유적지에 다른 시대의 유적이 덮어 씌워지는 것은 흔한 현상이다. 

As Wolseong was a city of Silla dynasty during around 1000 years, huge underground artifacts were buried in the city. Government tried to excavate them in the 1970s but gave up due to lack of excavation techniques. It is very difficult to excavate because the remains of various eras overlap vertically. It is currently being excavated from 2014 and plan to be completed by 2025.

월성은 신라 천년의 도읍이었던 만큼 지하에 어마어마한 유물이 묻혀있어 1970년대에 발굴을 시도했다가 당시 기술로는 도저히 발굴할 수가 없어 그대로 덮어버렸다고 한다. 여러 시대의 흔적이 수직으로 겹쳐 있어 발굴하기가 매우 까다롭기 때문이다. 하여 2014년부터 활발히 발굴 중이며 2025년까지 완료를 목표로 진행중이다.

Maybe Walseong 's a maid of honor made royal table using water from this well and brought it to King Silla. The Wolseong site is currently a vacant place, but I think it is a wonderful place to fill the vacancy with our imagination.

월성의 궁녀가 이 곳 우물에서 물을 길어 신라 왕에게 올릴 수라상을 만들었을지도 모를 일이다. 

이 곳 월성지구는 현재 빈 터만 남아 있지만 그 빈 곳을 우리의 상상력으로 채워 볼 수 있는 멋진 장소라고 생각된다.
