Incheon China town_ 인천 차이나 타운

 Incheon Chinatown is an area that was formerly known as Jemulpo. It was formed as residential area for Chinese in 1882 when Jemulpo was designated as an opening port area, and various nations formed it as a settlement area. This place boasts over 100 years of history, so there were many twists and turns. In the 1920s, Chinatown was its best days, selling various items imported from China to Korea and earning huge profits. In the 1970s, the Korean government regulated foreign ownership of land and buildings and it had become a declined area until 1980, but after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Korea and China in 1992, Chinatown began to be restructured. In 2001, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism designated it as a tourism special zone and it has been famous as a sightseeing spot after rearranging modern cultural assets.

 현재 인천 차이나 타운은 예전 제물포라고 불리던 지역으로서 1882년 제물포가 개항지로 결정되면서 여러 국가에서 이곳으로 조계지를 형성하며 자리를 잡을 때 형성된 중국인 거주 지역이다. 100년이 넘는 역사를 자랑하는 만큼 우여곡절도 많았다. 1920년대에는 차이나타운의 전성기로서 중국에서 수입된 각종물품을 한국에 판매하여 막대한 수익을 올렸다고 한다. 1970년대에 한국정부에서 외국인 토지 및 건물 소유에 대한 규제를 하면서 1980년대까지 이곳은 쓸쓸히 쇠락해 가는 지역이 되었으나 1992년 한 중 수교이후 차이나타운이 재 정비되기 시작하였고 2001년 문화관광부가 이곳을 관광특구로 지정하고 근대문화재를 재정비하면서 관광지로 유명해지게 되었다.

 It is located in Chinatown-ro, Jung-gu, Incheon, and takes about one hour by car from Seoul. The yellow section of the picture below is Chinatown.

차이나타운은 인천광역시 중구 차이나타운로에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 1시간 걸린다. 아래 사진의 노란색 구역이 차이나타운이라고 보시면 되겠다.

 You can park in the nearby public parking lot and enter the Chinatown via the various access roads. There are no special boundaries, but some places have pillars to announce the start of Chinatown as shown below.

 근처 공영주차장등을 이용해 주차를 하시고 여러군데 있는 진입로를 통해 차이나타운으로 들어가실 수 있다. 특별한 경계가 있는 것은 아니나 어떤 곳은 아래와 같이 차이나타운의 시작을 알리는 기둥이 서 있기도 하다.

 Stone buildings of 19th century the opening port era style are noticeable in the streets. The Japanese-style building on the right side seems to have been remodeled to produce the appearance of the time of enlightenment. Nowadays, Gunsan and Incheon are renovated into Japanese style and the buildings that add to the atmosphere of the enlightenment time are increasing.

 거리 곳곳에는 19세기 개항기 양식의 석조건물들이 눈에 띈다. 우측의 일본식 건물은 개화기 모습을 연출하기 위해 리모델링한 것으로 보인다. 요즘 군산이나 인천은 이렇게 일본식으로 개축을 해서 개화기 관광지 분위기를 더하는 건물들이 늘어나고 있는 추세이다.  

 Buildings in Chinatown use a lot of red color. It is related to the reason why Chinese people like red color, and it is said that red color is accepted as good meaning of wealth and privilege symbol in China, and color that defeats demons.

 차이나 타운 내의 건물들은 유독 붉은색을 많이 사용한다. 중국인들이 붉은색을 좋아하는 이유와 무관하지 않은데 붉은색이 중국에서는 부와 특권의 상징, 귀신을 물리치는 색 등의 좋은 의미로 받아들여진다고 한다.

 The first time I visited Chinatown was 10 years ago, and there has been a lot of maintenance and a lot of different types of shops selling food and food comparing to the past, and tourists are getting more and more in proportion. Many people are filling the streets.

 필자가 차이나타운을 처음 방문했던 것이 10년전인데 그 때에 비해 정비도 많이 되었고 물건, 음식을 파는 점포의 종류도 훨씬 다양해 졌으며 관광객들은 그에 비례해서 점점 많아지고 있다. 사람들이 거리를 가득 메우고 있다.   

 I think the business skills of the Chinese are very nice. There was a new shop selling sugar cane that was not seen until recently. It is said to have excellent efficacy in fine dust, which has recently been recognized as a major problem in Korea. I bought it and ate quickly.

 화교들의 장사실력은 알아줘야 할 것 같다. 얼마전까지도 보이지 않던 사탕수수를 파는 가게도 새로 생겼다. 최근 한국에서 큰 문제로 인식되고 있는 미세먼지에 탁월한 효능이 있다고 한다. 얼른 하나 사 먹었다.

 The bakery that sells mooncakes seems to have changed the interior splendidly, so the products seem more delicious.

 월병을 파는 제과점도 이전에 비해 인테리어를 새로 변경한 듯 한데 제품들이 더 맛있어 보인다.

 Mooncake is a typical Chinese cookie which is made during the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. This shop sells it all year round. Although I don’t enjoy it because there is a lot of oil in the dough and it has a dry and crumbling texture, but I bought one for each type in remembrance of visiting Chinatown.

 월병은 중국의 대표적인 과자로 중국의 추석인 중추절에 만들어 먹는 과자이다. 이 곳에서는 1년 내내 판매 중이다. 반죽에 기름이 많이 들어가고 퍽퍽한 식감이라 그렇게 즐기는 편은 아니지만 차이나타운에 온 기념으로 종류별 1개씩 사 보았다.

 Chinatown was a collective residence for Chinese, but now many Chinese have been assimilated with Koreans, such as naturalization to Korean nationality, settlement after marriage to Korean people. Their appearance is similar to that of Koreans, so I cannot distinguish until they speak Chinese. However, they are trying to keep their own culture such as operation their own schools. Chinatown is a charming place where we can see small China in Korea.

 이곳 차이나 타운은 화교들의 집단 거주지 였으나 현재 많은 화교들이 한국국적으로 귀화하고 한국인과 결혼해서 정착하는 등 한국인과 동화되어 버린 상태이다. 외모도 한국인과 비슷해서 중국어를 하기 전까지는 필자도 구분을 하기 어렵다. 하지만 자신들의 문화를 잊지 않기 위해 자체적으로 학교를 운영하는 등의 노력을 하고 있다고 한다. 한국내의 작은 중국을 볼 수 있는 차이나타운은 매력적인 동네이다.

 It is the appearance of the streets around Chinatown. The commercial building where cafes are located has also been renovated into Japanese style.

 차이나 타운 주변 거리의 모습이다. 카페들이 들어서 있는 상업건물도 외부를 일본양식으로 새단장한 상태이다. 

 Near Chinatown, there is a large street called in Incheon ‘GaeHang Nuri Gil’ which is the street has a large number of buildings lined up to the left and right.

 차이나 타운 근처에는 개항기 당시 건물들이 좌우로 늘어서 있는 넓은 거리인 인천 개항누리길이 있다.

 Sculptures are on display to make your eyes happy.

 군데군데 조각품들이 전시되어 있어 눈을 즐겁게 해 준다.

 It is a clock that tells you that the opening time of the port was started in 1883 when the Jemulpo treaty was done. It is interesting that 1883 is carved in the place where 12 should be. This site seemed as if the time had stopped in the modern times in Korea, so it has a lot of images of the time, and I feel like I have come to the past using a time machine.

 제물포조약이 있었던 1883년을 기점으로 개항기가 도래했다는 것을 알려주는 시계이다. 12가 있어야 할 위치에 1883이 새겨져 있는 것이 흥미롭다. 한국 근대시기에 시간이 멈춰 있는 듯 이곳은 당시의 모습을 많이 간직하고 있어서 타임머신을 타고 온 듯한 기분이 들기도 했다.

 Chinatown, not far from Seoul and rich in variety of food and sightseeing, is recommended to visit during sightseeing in Korea. Incheon Liberty Park and the promenade at the top of Chinatown also provide pretty picturesque scenery. In particular, if you visit in spring, you will be able to enjoy the superb view filled with many cherry trees enough to cover the sky.

 서울에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있으며 다양한 먹거리와 볼거리가 풍부한 차이나 타운은 한국 관광 시 꼭 한번 방문해 보실 것을 추천 드린다. 차이나 타운 위쪽에 있는 인천 자유공원과 산책길도 꽤나 근사한 풍경을 제공해준다. 특히 봄철에 방문하시면 하늘이 가려질 만큼 수많은 벚꽃들로 가득 찬 절경을 감상하실 수 있을 것이다.
