Maetan market(Suwon)_매탄시장(수원)

 As the large marts entered near the residential areas, the place where the Koreans buy the necessities moved rapidly from the traditional market to the large mart. Merchants in traditional markets had to leave the market due to customer churn or endure declines in sales. Traditional markets are making various efforts to attract customers again, and the government also provides support measures to revive the traditional market. Public parking lots have been introduced for customers and issued traditional market vouchers. Each market is also trying to transform into specialized markets through taking advantage of their characteristic.

The Maetan market is in unique place among apartment complexes. As the apartment complex was built in Maetan-dong Suwon early in 1980, a night market for the employees of the apartment construction was formed and it has been developed based on this. Even though it is small compared to other traditional markets, but it has a lot of demand because of the apartments around it and the stores that are located in the market treat daily necessity as main product, so they are always crowded with people. Sometimes, cultural performances take place in a small space between the apartment and the market.

 대형마트가 주거지 인근 곳곳에 진입하면서 기존 한국인들이 생필품을 구입하는 장소가 전통시장에서 대형마트로 빠른 속도로 이동했다. 전통시장의 상인들은 고객이탈로 시장을 떠나거나 매출액 감소를 견뎌야 했다.  현재 전통시장에서는 고객을 다시 끌어들이기 위해 다방면의 노력을 하고 있고 정부에서도 지원책을 마련하여 전통시장 살리기에 도움을 주고 있다. 고객이 이용할 수 있는 공영주차장을 마련하고 전통시장 상품권을 발행하는 등의 방안이 도입되었으며 시장마다 특징을 살려 특화형 시장으로 탈바꿈하기 위해 계속 변화 중이다.

 매탄시장은 아파트 단지 사이의 특이한 위치에 조성된 시장이다. 1980년초 수원 매탄동에 아파트가 들어서면서 아파트 공사장의 인부들을 위한 야시장에서 점차 규모가 확대되며 전통시장의 모습을 갖추게 되었다. 다른 전통시장에 비해 규모가 작은 편에 속하지만 주변에 아파트를 끼고 있어 수요가 많으며 입점해 있는 점포들이 생필품 위주로 되어 있어 항상 사람들로 붐빈다. 가끔 아파트와 시장 사이의 작은 공간에서 문화공연이 이루어지기도 한다.   

The market is located in Maetan-dong Suwon. It takes about 1 hour from Seoul by car and 10 minutes from the map museum.

매탄시장은 수원시 매탄동에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 1시간 걸리며 지도박물관에서는 10분 내에 갈 수 있다.

There is a parking lot in front of the market but it is not wide so it can be difficult to use when there are many people.

 시장 앞에 주차장이 있으나 넓지 않아 사람이 많을 때는 이용하기 어려울 수도 있다.

Many shops are closed the door because I visited there in the late evening so the streets were quiet.

 늦은 저녁시간에 방문해서 문을 닫은 점포도 많고 거리가 한산하다.

The stores in the market are mainly restaurants that can be eaten, a side dish shop, a butcher shop, and a vegetable shop so It is likely to be enough to replace the Mart because main product of the market is based on daily necessities that are easy to use by apartment residents which are the main customers. The market is right in front of the apartment, so residents don’t need to go far for shopping.

 식사를 할 수 있는 음식점, 반찬가게, 정육점, 야채 등 주 고객층인 아파트 주민들이 손쉽게 이용할 수 있는 생필품 위주로 입점해 있어 마트를 대신하기에 부족함이 없을 것 같다. 아파트 바로 앞에 있으니 주민들 입장에서는 굳이 멀리 나갈 필요가 없다. 

There are electric signboards on the streets passing through the center of the market, so it seems to be easy to post and read information about events and sales.

 시장 중앙을 지나는 거리 위에는 전광판이 있어 행사 및 세일 관련 정보들을 게시하고 열람하기 편할 듯싶다.

Some of the restaurants in the market are famous one which shown in media. It is also a result of the efforts of the merchants' association to promote shops.

 시장 내 음식점들 중에는 TV에 방영된 맛집들도 있다. 상인회에서 홍보에도 힘을 쓴 결과다.

Even though it is traditional market but completely changed the system and improved facilities so I think there is no any inconvenience compared to large Mart.

 전통 재래시장의 모습을 하고 있지만 시스템을 완전히 바꾸어 마트와 비교해 이용에 불편함이 전혀 없을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다.

I usually use marts in front of the house, but sometimes I find that the traditional market goods are better in terms of price and quality when I buy things in the traditional market. However, it is uncomfortable to go, and it is bothered to go there on a cold or hot day.  I hope that traditional market will not disappear through creation of more competitive markets like the Maetan market. If you do not have a chance to visit the Korean market, I recommend you take time to experience the modernization of the market in this place.

 필자도 집 앞에 바로 마트가 있어 주로 마트를 이용하곤 하지만 가끔 전통시장에서 물건을 사면서 비교해 보면 전통시장의 물건이 가격대비 품질이 좋은 경우가 많다. 다만 시장에 가는 길이 불편하고 춥거나 더운 날 야외에서 쇼핑하기가 귀찮기 때문에 마트를 이용하는 것 같다. 

 매탄시장처럼 경쟁력이 있는 시장이 더 많이 탄생하여 전통상권이 사라지는 일이 없었으면 좋겠다. 

 한국 관광 시 시장에 들러 볼 기회가 없었다면 수원 방문 시 이곳 매탄시장에서 현대화 되고 있는 시장의 모습을 느껴볼 수 있는 시간을 가져볼 것을 추천한다.
