Jinju Jungang market(Jinju)_진주중앙시장(진주)

 It was the market where people came to buy what they needed before appearance of the big mart. Simple things used to be in the neighborhood supermarket, but relatively expensive items such as meat, fish, fruit, clothes, shoes were purchased in traditional market. While the traditional markets have declined as large-scale marts operated by large corporations have entered the big city center, they are still operated actively in the local cities.

 The Jinju Central Market is very large compared to the size of the city. There are many delicious restaurants in the market and they are full of merchants and customers who buy and sell various goods. As people moved to a large shopping center, the market was almost disappeared, however, as the government promoted the traditional market revitalization project actively and the efforts of the merchants have been added, the traditional markets seems to be recovering after passing the worst situation. 

대형마트가 생기기 전 사람들이 필요한 물건을 구매하기 위해 들르는 곳은 시장이었다. 간단한 물건은 동네 슈퍼에서 사곤 했지만 고기, 생선, 과일을 비롯해 옷, 신발 등과 같은 비교적 값나가는 물건은 거의 시장에 나가 구매하는 것이 일반적인 동네의 풍경이었다. 대기업에서 운영하는 대형마트가 도심 곳곳에 들어서면서 전통시장은 쇠퇴하였지만 아직도 지방도시에는 예전의 규모를 제법 갖춘 시장이 활기를 띠며 운영되고 있다. 

 진주중앙시장은 도시의 크기에 비해 매우 큰 규모를 자랑한다. 여러 맛집들이 시장안에 있고 다양한 물건을 사고파는 상인들의 모습에 활기가 넘친다.  사람들이 대형쇼핑센터로 발길을 옮기게 되면서 시장은 사라지다시피 하였으나 정부차원에서 전통시장살리기 프로젝트를 다방면으로 전개하였고 상인들의 노력이 더해지면서 전국의 전통시장들은 전성기에 비하면 많이 위축된 것이 사실이나 개인적인 생각으로 최악의 상황을 지나 회복 중에 있는 듯 하다.   

The Jinju Central Market is located in Jinju, South Gyeongsang Province and takes about 4 hours by car from Seoul. It is a 10-minute drive from Jinju Castle.

 진주중앙시장은 경상남도 진주에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 4시간 걸린다. 진주성에서는 차로 10분 내 거리에 있다.

The public parking lot is at the entrance of the market. The parking fee is 200 won per 10 minutes. If you want to get a free parking ticket please refer to this advantage that some of shops provide them after using a restaurant or buying something in the market. One of the reasons for the stagnation of the traditional market is the lack of parking space. In the central market, parking lots are provided in front of the market to help customers. I think it is a desirable change.

 공영주차장이 시장 입구에 있다. 주차비는 10분에 200원인데 시장에서 음식점을 이용하거나 물건을 산 뒤 사장님에게 주차 할인권을 달라고 하면 주시는 곳들이 있으니 이 점 활용하도록 하자. 전통시장이 침체된 원인 중 하나가 주차공간의 부족이었는데 중앙시장에서는 이렇게 시장 앞에 주차장을 마련해서 고객의 편의를 돕고 있다. 바람직한 변화라고 생각한다.

There were quite a lot of shops that did not open the door yet because I visited in the morning.

 아침시간에 방문해서 그런지 아직 문을 열지 않은 상점들이 꽤 많았다.  

It was a friendly atmosphere seeing the mannequin that I saw on the market when I was a kid.

 어렸을 적 시장에서 보던 마네킹의 모습을 보는 것 같아 정겹다.

Preparations for day sales are busy and lively.

 하루의 영업을 준비하는 모습이 분주하고 활기차다.

 This place is not opened yet. When the market opens in earnest, it seems to be crowded with quite a lot of people. I was surprised that the size of the market was much bigger than I expected.

 이곳은 아직 영업시작 전. 본격적으로 시장이 개시하면 꽤 많은 사람들로 붐빌 것 같다. 시장의 규모가 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 커서 놀랐다.

 The specialty of the Jinju central market is honey bread. The shop that many people want to buy is not here. But I also like to buy at a shop that is being operated next to the famous one.

 중앙시장의 명물 먹거리가 꿀빵이라는데... 사람들이 많이 찾는 맛집은 여기가 아니고 다른 곳이라 한다. 필자는 맛집 옆에서 영업하는 가게에서 사 먹는 것도 좋아한다.

I bought one because it was impressive that the owner 's work hard and diligent.

 주인아저씨가 부지런하게 일하시는 모습이 감동적이어서 하나 샀다. 

I see that the face of the owner is stamped on the brand of the product. It is good to be working with pride.

 제품상표에 사장님 얼굴이 찍혀있는 걸 보니 본인이 만드신 음식에 자신이 있으신가 보다. 자부심을 가지고 일하시는 모습이 참 좋다. 

There is an attraction of young entrepreneurs as part of the project to revive the traditional market. I think it made many positive effects through inducing the young people to start their business in the traditional market to create fresh winds and to diversify the items handled in the market.

 It is said that the youth food zone was formed on the 2nd floor in the market.

 전통시장 살리기 프로젝트의 일환으로 청년창업자들의 유치가 있다. 젊은 사람들이 전통시장에서 사업을 시작하도록 유도하여 신선한 바람을 일으키고 시장에서 취급하는 아이템을 다각화 하고자 하는 의도인데 많은 긍정적인 효과를 보였다고 생각한다. 

 이 곳 진주 중앙시장에서도 2층에 청년 푸드존을 조성했나 보다. 

I was not able to watch since it was before opening time, but I would like to cheer young businessmen who work hard with dreams and enthusiasm. I also wish the development of the Jinju central market.

 아직 영업시작 전이라 구경은 못 해봤지만 꿈과 열정을 가지고 열심히 사업하시는 청년사업가 분들을 응원한다. 진주중앙시장의 중흥도 기원한다.

Even though the colorful umbrellas are a bit countrified, they seem to match the mood of the market.

 알록달록한 우산들이 약간 촌스럽긴 해도 시장의 분위기와 잘 어울리는 것 같다.

It was common for Korean people to buy their daily necessities at supermarkets in these markets before the appearance of big mart. The shop near the houses was small and not enough to handle all the goods, so we bought all sorts of things in the supermarket inside the traditional market.

 대형 마트가 생기기 전 한국사람들은 생필품들을 이런 시장 내 슈퍼마켓에서 구입하는 것이 일반적이었다. 집 앞 가게는 모든 물건을 취급하기엔 작았고 이렇게 시장안의 슈퍼마켓에서는 어지간한 물건은 다 살 수 있었다.

It is a bakery opposite the public parking facility. It retains the appearance of the old local bakery.

 공영주차장 맞은 편 제과점이다. 예전 동네 제과점의 모습을 간직하고 있다.

Most of the breads which this bakery had were in memories of my childhood. Although I already had breakfast, I bought them as many as I could. They were not particularly great taste, but thankful breads that reminded us of old times.

The big market like this cannot be found now in Seoul. If you want to see the big traditional market in Korea, I recommend you to visit the Jinju central market here. I hope that the traditional market, which is slowly recovering, will find the glory they originally had again.

취급하는 빵들도 추억속의 메뉴들이 대부분이었다. 아침식사를 하고 난 다음임에도 불구하고 이것저것 보이는 대로 샀다. 특별히 대단한 맛은 아니었지만 잠시 옛날 생각나게 해준 고마운 빵들....  

 이렇게 큰 시장은 서울에서는 이제 찾아 볼 수가 없다. 한국의 대형 전통시장의 모습을 보시고 싶다면 이곳 진주 중앙시장을 추천하며 조금씩 살아나고 있는 전통시장이 다시 옛 영화를 찾을 수 있기를 희망한다.
