71. Lim Kkeokjeong(Goseokjeong Pavilion, Cheorwon)_임꺽정(고석정, 철원)

 Lim Kkeokjeong was one of the big 3 thieves of Joseon dynasty and acted in the time of Myeongjong reign (1521 ~ 1562). With another man, Hong Gil Dong, he is one of the 100 great men appeared in the song. He gave vicarious satisfaction to general people at that time through solving the mind that was suppressed by a status system.

 They are being worshipped by people as a righteous outlaw, and he is also called as Robin Hood of Korea. Indeed, if Lim Kkeokjeong looted the property of noble man or official which they had collected, he handed over them to the poor people around him, and because of this, he was able to escape with the help of the people whenever officials tried to arrest him.  Near Goseokjeong is a beautiful scenery, so King Jinpyeong built a pavilion which has the 2nd floor and used it as a resort at the time of Silla. There is a cave which has the legend that Lim Kkeokjeong used it to hide himself behind.

 Goseokjeong is located in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes by car from Seoul.

 임꺽정은 조선의 3대 도적 가운데 한 사람으로 조선 명종때에 활동하였다.(1521~1562) 다른 한 사람인 홍길동과 함께 100명의 위인들 중 한 사람으로 노래에 등장하는데 당시 사람들의 신분제도에 억눌려 있던 마음을 해소시키는 데 대리만족을 준 영향이 크다. 이들은 사람들에 의해 의적으로 추앙 받으며 한국의 로빈훗 이라는 별명도 생기게 된다. 실제로 임꺽정은 관리나 양반들이 축재한 재물을 약탈하면 주변의 어려운 사람들에게 나누어 주었으며 이 때문에 관리들이 임꺽정을 잡으려 할 때마다 백성들의 도움으로 피할 수 있었다고 한다. 임꺽정에 대한 자세한 내용은 자료실을 참고하도록 하자.(http://gbbrake.tistory.com/163)

고석정은 경치가 아름다워 신라 진평왕 때 2층 누각을 건립하여 휴양지로 이용했으며 임꺽정이 활동할 당시 몸을 숨기기 위해 사용했다고 하는 바위굴이 있다.     

고석정은 강원도 철원에 있으며 서울에서 승용차로 약 1시간 40분 정도 걸린다.

 The parking lot in front of Goseokjeong is wide and convenient to use. Parking fee is 2,000 won per day, and there is no admission fee for Goseokjeong.

 고석정 앞 주차장이 넓어 이용이 편리하다. 주차요금은 1일 2,000원이며 고석정은 별도 입장료가 없다. 

 Cheolwon, Gangwon province which has Gokseokjeong is facing the border with North Korea, and there are many facilities related to security since it is currently in a truce with North Korea. The 2nd Tunnel, Labor Party Office, Victory Observatory, Baekmugoji exhibit hall. If you are planning to visit Cheorwon including Goseokjeong, it would be nice to refer to it.

 고석정이 있는 강원도 철원은 북한과 국경을 맞대고 있는 곳이며 북한과는 현재 휴전 중이므로 안보와 관련된 시설들이 많다. 제2 땅굴, 노동당사, 승리전망대, 백마고지 전시관 등이다. 고석정을 포함 철원 관광을 계획하고 계신 분들은 참고하시면 좋을 듯 하다.

 There is a statue of Lim Kkeokjeong on the way to Goseokjeong after passing the parking lot. He was a thief to the Joseon government, and a righteous outlaw to the general public. What kind of heart did he has during fighting against the government upon his life? The truth is not known, but it seems true that the people who lived in the same period had aversion to the government and they wanted to have vicarious satisfaction through the character of Lim Kkeokjeong.

 주차장을 지나 고석정으로 가는 길에 임꺽정의 동상이 있다. 조선 정부에게는 도적, 일반 민중들에게는 의적으로 불렸던 사람. 과연 이 분은 어떤 마음으로 목숨을 걸고 정부에 대항하며 싸웠을까. 진실은 알 수 없고 다만 동 시대를 살아갔던 민초들의 정부에 대한 반감이 상당했으며 임꺽정이라는 인물을 통해 대리만족을 하려 했다는 시대상이 반영된 것은 맞는 듯 하다. 

 A sightseeing train that can be visited nearby is running at the entrance to Goseokjeong.

 고석정 입구에는 근처를 돌아볼 수 있는 관광열차가 운행 중이다.   

 A monument commemorate the 1988 Seoul Olympic stands here. Why is it here?

 1988 서울올림픽을 기념하는 비석이 서 있다. 왜 이곳에 있을까.

 It is a place where you can see Goseokjeong Valley from the highest point.

 고석정 계곡을 제일 높은 곳에서 바라볼 수 있는 장소이다.

 The scenery here is beautiful, but it is much more impressive to watch it close.

 이 곳에서의 경치도 아름답지만 가까이서 보는 것이 훨씬 감동적이다.

 The Pavilion shown on the left of below picture is the place where you can see the scenery just before and you can go to Goseokjeong if you go down the stairs below.

 왼쪽위에 보이는 정자가 방금 전 경치를 볼 수 있는 곳이고 아래 계단을 따라 내려가면 고석정으로 갈 수 있다.

 Goseokjeong is getting closer and closer.

 점점 가까워지는 고석정

 It is Goseokjeong. The strange rocks and bizarre stones form a colony and create a unique landscape. It is hard to see in Korea. It is the view of downstream which is seen below.

 고석정이다. 기암괴석들이 군락을 이루어 독특한 풍경을 자아낸다. 한국에서는 보기 힘든 경치이다. 보이는 곳은 하류

 This is the image of the upper stream. The sceneries are different between upper and downstream as if they are totally different place.

 여기는 상류의 모습이다. 전혀 다른 장소를 찍어 놓은 것처럼 경치가 다르다.

 A long time ago, the pavillion stood here in a stunning scenery, and it has been called Goseokjeong, however, it has been changed to the name of the entire area now.

 멋진 경치를 자랑하는 이곳에 예로부터 정자가 서 있었으며 고석정이라 불렀으나 이제는 이 지역 전체를 부르는 명칭으로 바뀌었다. 

 It is amazing to show different shapes depending on the height and angle of taking.

 찍는 높이와 각도에 따라 다른 모습을 보여주는 게 신기하다. 

 The topography of the Cheorwon area is different from that of others of Korean Peninsula and that is a volcanic zone. The basement is made of granite and basaltic layer was built on it through the volcanic eruptions covered the earth. In addition, weathering, erosion and faulting has been added. The special shape of stratum that you can see in this area has been made like this way.

 철원 지역의 지형은 다른 한반도의 것들과는 다른 특색이 있는데 바로 화산지대라는 것이다. 기반은 화강암으로 되어 있으나 화산폭발로 용암이 대지를 뒤덮으면서 현무암 층이 형성되고 풍화와 침식 그리고 단층 등을 통해 지금 보시는 특이한 형태의 지층이 만들어지게 된 것이다.

 It is said to have been made 100 million years ago.

 그렇게 만들어진 지 1억년이 되었다고 한다.

 Appearance of the pavilion which looked at after coming down. It is said that it was made in the 1970s, but as you can see, the reinforced concrete was heavily used. I understand the need to restore with less cost in a short period of time, but it is a pity that it is not in harmony with the surrounding scenery. I hope to be able to see the pavilion made in the traditional way even later.

 내려와서 바라본 정자의 모습. 1970년대에 만들어 진 것이라고 하는데 당시에 복원된 유적지들은 보시다시피 철근 콘크리트가 많이 사용되었다. 빠른 시기에 비용을 적게 들여 복원해야 할 필요성은 이해하나 주변의 경치와 조화롭지 못한 것은 아쉽다. 나중에라도 전통방식으로 만들어진 정자를 만나볼 수 있기를 기대한다.

 The rocks near Goseokjeong, which I saw closely, are like meteorites falling from outer space.

 가까이서 본 고석정 주변의 바위들은 우주에서 떨어진 운석 같다.

 There is a marina on the left side of the Hantan River, and you can see Goseokjeong using a boat.

 한탄강 물길 좌측으로 선착장이 하나 있는데 고석정을 배로 관광할 수 있다. 

 There is a space inside the rock where many people can enter, and it is said that Lim Kkeokjeong hid there.

 이 바위 안쪽에 사람 여러 명이 들어갈 수 있는 공간이 있고 그곳에 임꺽정이 은신했다고 전해진다.

 I came to the marina to see the rest of hidden beautiful scenery of Goseokjeong. The boarding cost is 5,000 won for adults and 2,500 won for children.

 고석정의 숨은 절경을 마저 보기위해 선착장으로 왔다. 탑승비용은 성인 5,000원 어린이 2,500원이다.

 The boat may shake a little because it is a small, so please be careful if you have dizziness.

 작은 배이기 때문에 약간 흔들리니 혹시 어지럼증이 있으신 분들은 주의하시기 바란다.

 You can see the scenery, which you could not see when you were on land, in the boat.

 육지에 있을 때 볼 수 없었던 경치를 배에서는 볼 수 있다. 

 The captain explains about Goseokjeong while driving, but English is not supported. Each of these unusual rocks has a name, but I cannot remember it.

 선장님이 운전하시면서 고석정에 대해 설명을 해 주시는데 영어는 지원이 안된다. 이렇게 특이하게 생긴 바위들 마다 이름이 붙어 있는데 기억이 안 난다.

 It is a geologically important place in Korea, and it is recommended visiting Goseokjeong, where trace of Lim Kkeokjeong is left.

 한국의 지질학적으로 중요한 곳이기도 하며 임꺽정의 자취가 남아있는 고석정은 꼭 한번 방문해 보실 것을 추천한다. 

 For reference, I moved around near, it seems to be good to have a meal near the parking lot of Goseokjeong. In general, size of restaurants are big and many of them are places designated as good restaurants, so there will be no disappointment at least.

  I visited a restaurant a little distance from here but was disappointed because the service and taste were not good. If I have a chance next time, I will visit other restaurants and leave a review.

참고로 근처를 돌아다녀 봤는데 식사는 고석정 주차장 근처의 음식점들이 드시기에 좋을 것 같다. 대체로 식당이 큰 편이고 모범음식점으로 지정된 곳들도 있어서 적어도 실망할 일은 없을 것이다.  

필자는 조금 떨어진 곳에 방문해 보았는데 서비스와 맛이 좋지 않아 실망했다. 다음에 기회가 된다면 다른 음식점을 방문하고 후기를 남기도록 하겠다.
