47. Kim Si Min(Jinju sanseong fortress, Jinju)_김시민(진주산성, 진주)

 It is the Jinju castle that will can help feel the lack of the Cheonan Kim Si-min historic site. As I mentioned earlier, as one of the three great victories of Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, it was that 3,800 of the Joseon army fought against 30,000 Japanese army and 10,000 of Japanese troops were died there. With the victory of this battle, Joseon was able to fully preserve Jeolla province and safely secure the breadbasket for preparation of the future invasion of Japan.  Jinju City is not a place where development is active recently, but there are no new and refined buildings, but it is a big city with a population as it was provincial capital of Gyeongsangnam-do before moving to Busan.  The road is well developed and you can feel the cozy atmosphere and I think it is a place to stop at once when you visit Gyeongnam area.

 Jinju Castle is located in Jinju, Gyeongnam and takes about 4 hours by car from Seoul.

 진주시는 최근에 개발이 활발하게 이루어 지는 곳이 아니기 때문에 화려한 건물들은 없으나 부산으로 도청이 옮겨 지기 전 경상남도의 도청 소재지였던 만큼 인구가 많고 규모가 큰 도시이다. 도로도 잘 발달되어 있으며 아늑한 분위기를 느낄 수 있어 경남지역 방문 시 한 번 들러 볼 만 한 곳이라고 생각한다.

진주성은 경남 진주에 위치하며 서울에서 승용차로 약 4시간 걸린다.

 You can use the parking lot in front of Jinju Castle. The parking fee is 200 won per 10 minutes. The price for admission to Jinju is 2,000 won for adults and 1,000 won for adolescent and 600 won for children.

 Parking space are narrow so if visitors are crowded, trouble to park would be expected.

 The main gate of the restored and well-maintained Jinju Castle is imposing.

 진주성 앞 주차장을 이용할 수 있으며 주차요금은 10분에 200원이며 진주성 관람요금은 성인 2,000원 청소년 1,000원 어린이는 600원이다.

주차장이 협소하여 관람객이 몰릴 경우 주차난이 예상된다.     

 복원, 정비된 진주성의 정문이 늠름하다. 

 Once inside the castle, you can see well-kept lawns and many old trees. It feels like coming to the amusement park.

성 내에 들어서면 관리가 잘 된 잔디와 제법 수령이 된 듯한 많은 나무들을 볼 수 있다. 흡사 유원지에 와 있는 느낌이라고 해야 할까.

 This place, called Yeongnam Pojeongsa, is the main gate of Provincial office for Governor during Joseon Dynasty.

 영남포정사라 불리는 이곳은 조선시대 관찰사 감영의 정문이다. 

 A stone tablet ‘Hamabi’ indicating that everyone below Governor should dismount from a horse. Only walking was allowed from here at that time.

 수령 이하 모두 말에서 내리라는 하마비. 이곳부터는 걸어서 들어가라는 얘기다.

 It is Gyeongjeol Sa shrine to honors Ha Gongjin, a symbol of loyalty in the Goryeo dynasty, who is progenitor of Jinyang Ha clan. He was a big player during the second invasion of Ghoran, but he was not well known comparing to General Gang Gamchan. Jinju castle is considerably larger than our expectation, so and there are many buildings of various era.

 고려시대 충절의 상징인 진양하씨의 시조 하공진을 모신 경절사. 거란의 제2차 침입 때 크게 활약한 분이지만 강감찬 장군에 비해 잘 알려지지는 않았다. 진주성은 생각보다 상당히 큰 규모라 이와 같이 여러 시대의 건물들이 들어서 있다.  

 The roads in the castle are beautiful with green trees.

 푸른 나무들이 우거져 있는 성 내의 길들이 아름답다.

 One side of Jinju Castle is covered by Nam River as shown below. The most fearful thing of defenders during siege warfare is the depletion of material due to isolation. Jinju castle has the advantage of receiving water and various materials through Nam River here.

 진주성의 한쪽은 아래와 같이 남강을 끼고 있다. 공성전 시 성 내에서 방어를 하는 쪽에게 가장 두려운 것이 고립으로 인한 물자 고갈인데 진주성은 이곳 남강을 통해 물과 각종 물자를 보급받을 수 있는 이점이 있었다.

 If you walk around the castle, there is a cafe near the Jinju National Museum.

 You can see the Jinju National Museum. It was like an oasis to me visiting on a hot summer day in July. The Jinju National Museum called as special museum for Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 so you can see many relics here related on Japanese invasion era.

 진주국립박물관을 만나 볼 수 있다. 7월의 더운여름날 방문한 필자에게는 오아시스와 같은 곳이었다. 진주국립박물관은 임진왜란 전문 박물관이라 불릴 정도로 임진왜란 관련 유적을 많이 볼 수 있는 곳이다. 

 The inside of the museum was very clean and cool. It was a refreshing feeling to my head.

 박물관 내부는 매우 깨끗하고 시원했다. 머리가 상쾌해지는 기분이었다. 

 The lobby was large and seemed to be utilized in various events of Jinju city. During this period, the works of elementary school students were exhibited.

 로비도 넓고 진주시의 각종행사에 활용되고 있는 듯 했다. 이 시기에는 초등학생들의 미술작품들이 전시되어 있었다.

 Photographs which show view of Jinju in late 19C and early 20C. The weight of tough life is felt in the appearance of a lady going to somewhere with a bucket over the head.

 진주의 19C 말 20C초 모습을 간직한 사진들. 양동이를 머리에 이고 가는 아주머니의 모습에서 고단한 삶의 무게가 느껴진다.

 Jinju is the area where Baekje first built during the Three Kingdoms period so it has a long history. Therefore, various artifacts can be found here. I rested tired body here in the hot weather and watched slowly.

 진주는 삼국시대에 백제가 처음 축성한 곳으로 오랜 역사를 간직한 지역이다. 따라서 다양한 유물들을 만나 볼 수 있다. 더운 날씨에 지친 몸을 쉬어 갈 겸 천천히 감상을 했다.

 There is a video about the battle of Jinju in the movie theater inside the museum, but it was only made in Korean without English subtitles, which made it difficult for foreigners to watch and understand it. I think it need to be improved.

 박물관 내부의 상영관에서 진주대첩 관련 영상을 방영중에 있는데 영문자막이 없이 한글로만 제작되어 있어 외국인들이 관람하는 데는 제한이 있어 아쉬웠다.  

 Scenes taken while heading out of the museum to the Chokseongnu Pavilion. Although the cannons were on display, it was a peaceful day so they could be seen as sculptures rather than a weapon. I will treat to the Chokseongnu Pavilion in the article of Non Gae.

 박물관을 나와 촉석루로 향하는 중에 찍은 풍경들. 화포가 전시되어 있기는 했지만 무기가 아닌 하나의 조형물로 보일정도로 평화로운 날이다. 촉석루는 논개 편에서 다루도록 하겠다.

 It was very hot, but the Jinju castle in photograph shows very nice scene with the combination of trees, grass and sunny weather.

 매우 무더웠지만 사진으로 보이는 진주성은 나무와 잔디 그리고 화창한 날씨가 어우러져 장관을 연출한다.

 There is an altar erected for those who died during the Japanese Invasion of 1592. I climbed up and paid a silent tribute to them for a moment.

 임진왜란 당시 전사한 분들을 위해 건립한 제단이다. 올라가서 잠시 묵념을 하고 내려왔다.

 Jinju has as many attractions as it has a long history. The city of Jinju was beautiful, the weather was also beautiful, and the view of the Nam River flowing slowly was peaceful. I am grateful for the Jinju that gave me good memories.

 진주성은 오랜 역사를 가진 만큼 많은 볼거리를 가지고 있었다. 진주라는 도시도 아름답고 날씨도 화창했으며 유유히 흘러가는 남강의 모습도 평화로웠다. 좋은 기억을 간직하게 해준 진주에 감사한다.
