99. Lee Sang(Lee Sang's House, Seochon in Seoul)_(이상의 집, 서촌)

 Lee Sang is a representative modern Korean writer during the Japanese colonial period. Born in 1910, died in 1937. He was born in the same year as the Korean-Japanese annexation and died before the independence, so he was a person who lived only the Japanese colonial period. At the age of 3, he left his parents' and grew up in his uncle's house at Tongin-dong. Many articles left in his short life are still being studied, and he is regarded as a genius.  Lee Sang's House is a building reminiscent of Lee Sang that The National Trust for Cultural Heritage purchased the part of the house of his uncle, which he lived for 20 years from 3 to 23 years old, and opened in 2014.

 이상은 일제강점기 한국의 대표적인 근대 작가이다. 1910년 출생, 1937년 사망으로 한일합방이 있던 그 해에 태어나서 광복전에 생을 마친 온전히 일제강점기를 살아갔던 인물이었다. 3세 때 부모의 품을 떠나 통인동 큰아버지 댁에서 성장하였고 짧은 생애동안 남긴 많은 글들이 아직까지도 연구되는 등 천재로 평가받는 분이다. 이상에 대한 자세한 내용은 자료실을 참고하도록 하자.(http://gbbrake.tistory.com/42)

이상의 집은 이상이 3세부터 23세까지 20년동안 살던 큰아버지 댁의 집터 일부를 2009년 문화유산국민신탁이 매입하여 2014년 개관한 이상을 추억하는 건물이다. 

 It is located in Hyoja-dong, Seoul. Since there is no parking space, it is recommended to use public transportation. It is the Seochon which is already famous sightseeing spot now.

이상의 집은 서울 청운효자동에 있으며 주차공간이 없으니 대중교통을 이용하실 것을 추천한다.  요즘 관광지로 유명해지고 있는 아니 이미 유명해진 서촌이 바로 이곳이다.

 Lee Sang’s house can be visited without difficulty by getting off from Gyeongbokgung Station on subway line 3. When you come out of exit 2 of Gyeongbokgung Station, you can see the following street. The right side is Gyeongbok Palace and the left side is Seochon.

 이상의 집은 지하철 3호선 경복궁역에서 내리면 어렵지 않게 찾아갈 수 있다. 경복궁역 2번 출구를 나오면 아래와 같은 거리가 보인다. 우측은 경복궁이고 좌측은 서촌이다.

 If you go up a little, the food culture street of Sejong village is left. Seochon was called for comparison with Bukchon and became a local name, and the government promotes the name of Sejong Village regarding this region. However, as the name of Seochon was called more often and familiar, it became famous as a Seochon among people.

 위로 조금 올라가다 보면 세종마을 음식문화의 거리가 왼쪽으로 있다. 서촌은 사람들이 북촌과 비교하기 위해 불려지다가 지역명칭이 된 것이고 정부에서는 세종마을이라는 명칭을 홍보하고 있다. 하지만 서촌이라는 이름이 더 자주 불리고 익숙하다 보니 사람들 사이에서는 서촌으로 유명해지게 되었다.

 There are local businesses and many famous restaurants are opening in the food culture streets. I recommend you to visit here once you have time.

 음식문화의 거리 안에는 골목상권이 자리잡고 있으며 곳곳에 맛집으로 유명한 집들이 영업 중이니 시간이 되시면 꼭 한번 방문해 보실 것을 추천한다.

 You can see Hyoja-dong branch of Woori Bank and go to the left alley here.

 우리은행 효자동 지점이 보이고 여기서 좌측 골목으로 들어가시면 된다.

 As you climb up the alley on the left, you can see the building, which seems to have been remodeled an ordinary modernized Hanok, to the right. It is the ‘Lee Sang’s House’.

 좌측 골목을 따라 올라가다 보면 평범한 개량한옥을 개조한 듯한 건물이 우측으로 보이는데 이것이 바로 이상의 집이다. 

 If you look carefully, it is written in white small letters as 'Lee Sang’s House'. The house you see now is actually part of the house where he lived. The original house where he lived was a large house having 1000 m2 land including the house, and when the uncle died, the house was sold and divided into several lots, and some small urban Hanok were built. This house is one of the small Hanok houses that were built at the time.

 잘 보면 흰색 작은 글씨로  '이상의 집'이라 쓰여 있다. 현재 보이는 집은 사실 이상이 살았던 집의 일부이다. 실제 이상이 살았던 집은 이 집을 포함 300평 정도의 넓은 한옥집이었고 이상의 큰아버지가 돌아가시자 집이 팔리고 여러 필지로 나뉘어져 작은 도시형 한옥집들이 지어졌다. 이 집은 당시 지어졌던 작은 한옥집 중 하나라고 보시면 되겠다.

 It seems to show a mark of trying to make the space that remembers Lee Sang by making the best use of the small space.

 작은 공간을 최대한 활용하여 이상을 추억하는 공간으로 만들고자 노력한 흔적이 엿보인다.

 There is also a small souvenir shop related to Lee Sang next to the entrance.

 입구 옆에는 이상관련 자그마한 기념품도 판매하고 있다. 

 He is known as a writer, but he was interested in art and his major is architecture.

 이상은 작가로서 알려져 있으나 사실 미술에 관심이 많았으며 전공은 건축 분야이다.

 There is a massive iron door in the house, contrasting with the transparent windows on the outside. It is the entrance to the 'Lee Sang’s room'.

 밖의 투명한 유리창과 대조되는 육중한 철문이 이상의 집 안에 있다. '이상의 방'으로 들어가는 문이다.

 When you open the door, you will see a passage painted in black. The images related to Lee Sang’s life flow on the left wall.

 문을 열고 들어가면 모두 검은색으로 칠해진 통로가 나온다. 왼쪽 벽에는 이상의 삶이 영상으로 흐르고 있다.

 There is a stair to go up to the 2^nd floor on the right, but it is like a passage leading from the basement to the first floor. The walls also seem like the one of basement.

 우측에 바로 계단이 있는데 위로 올라가는 계단이지만 마치 지하에서 1층을 이어진 통로 같다. 벽들도 마치 지하실처럼 되어 있다.

 When you go up to the 2nd floor, the real world can be seen again. The old-fashioned hanok roofs and the room made with concrete are in odd harmony with each other.

 2층에 올라서면 다시 현실세계가 보인다. 오래된 도시 한옥의 지붕과 콘크리트로 된 이상의 방이 묘한 조화를 이루며 어울려 있다.

 The Lee Sang’s house has already been completed and opened, but it’s appearance looks not completed one. Although he could not show all of his literary world, he dead at a hospital in Japan less than 30 years old. Maybe it is the building that goes well with unfinished life and unfinished literature.

 이상의 집은 이미 완성되어 개방된 공간이지만 아직 다 지어지지 않은 모습을 하고 있다. 이상은 자신의 문학세계를 다 펼쳐 보이지 못한 채 30세도 안되는 나이에 일본의 어느 병원에서 요절하게 된다. 이상의 미완의 인생, 미완의 문학과 잘 어울리는 건물이 아닐까.
